Abstract

This study examines the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Islamic Religious Education at SMPN 5 Kerinci as part of the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. Using a qualitative approach and the Miles and Huberman data analysis technique, the study involved three informants: the Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teacher, the principal, and the vice principal of SMPN 5 Kerinci. The findings reveal that AI has successfully enhanced the development of more interactive and relevant learning content. Applications such as the “Mobile APP Al-Qur’an Tajwid Tafsir and Audio” and “Complete Prayer Guide APP” provide real-time and in-depth visual feedback, enriching the learning process by helping students better understand Qur’anic recitation and prayer procedures. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including unstable internet access, limited devices, and a lack of AI application content specific to Islamic education. These issues hinder the effective use of AI and affect the integration of technology in learning. To address these challenges, teachers at SMPN 5 Kerinci adopted strategies such as downloading materials for offline access, sharing devices, and creating additional content. This adaptive approach allows for more optimal use of AI despite existing limitations. These findings offer valuable insights into the challenges and solutions in implementing AI technology in religious education and provide recommendations for future research in different contexts.
