Abstract

This study aims to analyze Buya Hamka’s concept of modern Sufism through the philosophical dimensions of ontology, epistemology, and axiology, as well as to explain its relevance for the development of Guidance and Counseling services. The research employed a systematic literature review by examining a range of scholarly sources related to Hamka’s Sufi thought. The findings indicate that ontologically, Hamka’s Sufism is grounded in the principle of tawhid, emphasizing spiritual and moral balance while rejecting metaphysical speculation considered inconsistent with Islamic teachings; epistemologically, it integrates revelation, reason, and spiritual experience through a bayani and burhani approach that remains rational while accommodating the transformative process of tazkiyah through the stages of takhalli, tahalli, and tajalli; and axiologically, it positions Sufism as practical ethics that encourage diligent work, social contribution, and the development of virtuous character. In conclusion, the integration of Hamka’s modern Sufi values holds significant implications for Guidance and Counseling services, particularly in strengthening clients’ spiritual foundations, internalizing ethical virtues, and fostering a holistic counseling approach. Hamka’s modern Sufism is therefore highly relevant in addressing the spiritual crises of contemporary society while enriching the practice of Guidance and Counseling.
