Authorship Criteria

Jurnal Islamika: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman is committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics, academic integrity, and transparency in scholarly authorship. The journal follows the principles and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and adopts authorship criteria consistent with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), where applicable. This policy aims to ensure that authorship accurately reflects substantial intellectual contributions, prevents unethical authorship practices, and promotes accountability throughout the research and publication process.

A. Authorship

Authorship is granted only to individuals who have made substantial intellectual contributions to the conception, development, execution, and preparation of scholarly research. In the context of Islamic studies, such contributions may include the development of theoretical or conceptual frameworks, interpretation of Islamic texts and scholarly sources, historical and documentary analysis, empirical data collection, methodological development, and critical analysis of research findings.

All listed authors must actively participate in the preparation of the manuscript, approve its final version, and accept responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the published work. Authorship must not be assigned solely on the basis of academic position, institutional affiliation, supervisory responsibility, financial support, or personal relationships.

The order of authors must accurately reflect their respective contributions and be mutually agreed upon before manuscript submission. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all eligible contributors are appropriately recognized and that all listed authors have reviewed and approved the submitted manuscript.

1. General Principles of Authorship

Authorship criteria. Each individual listed as an author must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Make substantial contributions to the conception or design of the study, acquisition or collection of data, analysis, or interpretation of research findings.

  • Participate in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.

  • Review and approve the final version of the manuscript before publication.

  • Agree to be accountable for all aspects of the work and ensure that any questions concerning its accuracy, originality, or integrity are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Author order. The order of authors must be determined through mutual agreement based on the nature and extent of their intellectual contributions. The first author is generally the individual who has made the primary contribution to the research and manuscript preparation. However, the journal recognizes that contribution arrangements may vary depending on the nature of the research and collaborative agreements among authors.

Corresponding author. The corresponding author serves as the primary contact between the authors and the editorial office. Their responsibilities include managing manuscript submission, ensuring compliance with journal policies, coordinating responses to reviewers, submitting revised manuscripts, and confirming that all authors have approved the final manuscript. The corresponding author must also ensure the accuracy of authorship information, affiliations, contribution statements, and relevant ethical declarations.

Collective responsibility. All authors share responsibility for the scholarly integrity of the manuscript. Each author must be able to identify the contributions of their co-authors and have confidence in the integrity of those contributions. Authors must cooperate with the editorial office in addressing any concerns regarding research ethics, originality, data accuracy, or publication misconduct.

2. Acknowledgment of Contributors

Non-author contributors. Individuals who contribute to the research or manuscript preparation but do not meet all authorship criteria should be acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section, subject to their consent. Such contributions may include technical assistance, language editing, administrative support, research facilitation, or scholarly advice that does not constitute a substantial intellectual contribution sufficient for authorship.

Research supervision. Academic supervisors, research advisers, institutional leaders, and other individuals must not automatically be granted authorship solely because of their supervisory or administrative positions. They may qualify as authors only when they fulfill all established authorship criteria.

Funding sources. Authors must disclose all financial support received during the research and publication process, including research grants, institutional funding, scholarships, and other forms of sponsorship. Funding information must be reported in the Acknowledgments section or a separate Funding Statement. Financial support alone does not qualify an individual or institution for authorship.

Author contribution statement. Authors are required to provide a transparent description of their individual contributions using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), where applicable. Relevant categories include Conceptualization, Methodology, Investigation, Data Curation, Formal Analysis, Resources, Writing – Original Draft, Writing – Review & Editing, Supervision, Project Administration, and Funding Acquisition.

The author contribution statement must accurately reflect the work performed by each author and must be approved by all listed authors. The assignment of CRediT roles does not independently establish eligibility for authorship.

3. Ghost, Guest, and Gift Authorship

Ghost authorship. Ghost authorship occurs when an individual who meets the established authorship criteria is intentionally omitted from the author list. The journal prohibits this practice and requires all eligible contributors to be properly identified as authors. Individuals who contribute to manuscript preparation without meeting all authorship criteria should be appropriately acknowledged.

Guest authorship. Guest authorship occurs when an individual is included in the author list despite not fulfilling the required authorship criteria, often to enhance the perceived credibility, academic reputation, or publication prospects of a manuscript. Such practices are strictly prohibited.

Gift or honorary authorship. Gift or honorary authorship refers to the inclusion of individuals as authors solely because of personal relationships, institutional authority, professional status, academic supervision, or reciprocal arrangements. Jurnal Islamika does not permit the inclusion of individuals who have not made qualifying intellectual contributions.

Authorship misconduct. Any suspected manipulation of authorship, including undisclosed contributors, unauthorized inclusion of authors, or misrepresentation of individual contributions, may be investigated by the editorial board in accordance with relevant COPE guidance. Depending on the circumstances, the journal may request clarification, supporting documentation, or corrections and may take appropriate editorial action.

4. Changes to Authorship

Addition, removal, or reordering of authors. Any proposed changes to the author list after manuscript submission must be formally communicated to the editorial office. Requests must include a clear justification for the proposed changes and written consent from all listed authors, including individuals being added or removed.

Editorial approval. Changes to authorship are subject to editorial evaluation and approval. The journal reserves the right to request additional documentation to verify individual contributions and confirm that the proposed changes comply with its authorship policy.

Changes after acceptance or publication. Authorship changes requested after manuscript acceptance will be considered only when supported by a valid explanation and agreement among the authors. Changes requested after publication will be evaluated in accordance with applicable publication ethics procedures and may require the publication of a formal correction. Unresolved authorship disputes may be referred to the relevant institutions for investigation.

Author responsibilities. All authors are responsible for ensuring that the author list, author order, affiliations, and contribution statements accurately represent their participation in the research. The corresponding author must confirm that all authors have agreed to the submitted authorship information and any subsequent modifications.

5. Authorship Disputes and Ethical Resolution

Resolution of disputes. Any disagreement concerning authorship eligibility, author order, or individual contributions should initially be resolved through transparent communication among the researchers involved. If the dispute cannot be resolved, the journal may request clarification or supporting evidence and may refer the matter to the relevant academic or research institutions.

Editorial responsibilities. The editorial board will evaluate authorship-related concerns fairly, confidentially, and consistently with established publication ethics principles. As the journal is not responsible for determining the factual contributions of researchers in unresolved disputes, institutional investigation may be required before further editorial decisions are made.

Compliance with ethical standards. All authors submitting manuscripts to Jurnal Islamika: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman are expected to comply with this authorship policy. Violations may result in manuscript rejection, suspension of editorial processing, publication of corrections, retraction where warranted, or other appropriate actions consistent with COPE guidance.
