Correction and Retraction

Jurnal Islamika: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman is committed to maintaining the accuracy, reliability, transparency, and integrity of the scholarly record. The journal recognizes its responsibility to ensure that published research remains trustworthy and that any errors, inaccuracies, or ethical concerns identified after publication are addressed appropriately.

In accordance with the principles and guidelines recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the journal implements transparent procedures for correcting, retracting, and updating published articles. These procedures apply to all scholarly publications within the journal's scope, including textual, conceptual, historical, theoretical, and empirical research in Islamic studies.

Changes to published articles are made only when justified by legitimate academic, ethical, or editorial considerations. All substantive corrections and retractions are documented to preserve the integrity and traceability of the scholarly record.

1. Article Retraction

An article may be retracted when reliable evidence demonstrates that its findings, interpretations, or conclusions are substantially unreliable due to serious errors, research misconduct, or violations of publication ethics.

Grounds for retraction may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plagiarism: Substantial unauthorized use of another person's scholarly work, ideas, interpretations, or written materials without appropriate acknowledgment.

  • Fabrication or falsification: Deliberate invention, manipulation, or misrepresentation of research data, historical evidence, textual sources, interviews, or other scholarly materials.

  • Unreliable research findings: Major methodological, analytical, or interpretative errors that fundamentally undermine the reliability of the article's principal findings or conclusions.

  • Duplicate or redundant publication: Publication of substantially identical research findings in another journal or scholarly outlet without appropriate disclosure or justification.

  • Serious ethical violations: Significant breaches of research ethics, including violations of participant rights, unauthorized disclosure of confidential information, or other misconduct affecting the integrity of the research.

  • Misrepresentation of scholarly sources: Serious fabrication or distortion of references, historical documents, religious texts, or other primary sources that materially compromises the reliability of the published research.

  • Compromised publication processes: Evidence of manipulated peer review, fraudulent authorship practices, or other serious irregularities that undermine confidence in the article's publication.

Legitimate differences in scholarly interpretation, theological perspectives, Islamic jurisprudential opinions, or methodological approaches do not, by themselves, constitute grounds for retraction.

Authors who discover substantial errors in their published work are expected to notify the Editor-in-Chief promptly and provide relevant supporting information. The Editorial Board may also initiate an assessment when credible concerns are raised by reviewers, readers, institutions, or other relevant parties.

Retraction decisions are made following an appropriate editorial assessment and, where necessary, consultation with independent experts or relevant research institutions.

To preserve the scholarly record, retracted articles will ordinarily remain accessible on the journal's website and be clearly identified as retracted. Each retracted article will be linked to a freely accessible retraction notice explaining the reasons for the decision.

The retraction notice must identify the affected article, state the grounds for retraction, indicate who is retracting the article, and disclose any relevant disagreement among the authors regarding the decision.

In exceptional circumstances, such as legal requirements, serious privacy violations, or risks of significant harm, access to the article's content may be restricted or removed. Where possible, bibliographic information and an explanatory notice will remain available to preserve the continuity of the scholarly record.

2. Corrections and Publisher's Notes

Jurnal Islamika: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman recognizes that errors may occasionally be identified after publication. When such errors do not invalidate the overall findings or conclusions of an article, the journal may issue an appropriate correction rather than retracting the publication.

Corrections. A formal correction notice may be issued when an error affects the accuracy, clarity, or interpretation of published information but does not fundamentally undermine the article's scholarly reliability.

Corrections may address:

  • Errors in research data, tables, figures, or statistical information that do not invalidate the principal findings.

  • Incorrect citations, bibliographic details, or references requiring substantive clarification.

  • Errors in the transcription, translation, or attribution of Islamic texts, historical documents, or other scholarly sources.

  • Inaccuracies in methodological descriptions, analytical explanations, or research findings that can be corrected without substantially altering the article's conclusions.

  • Errors in author affiliations, funding disclosures, acknowledgments, or other relevant publication information.

Publisher's Notes. A Publisher's Note may be issued when errors introduced during the editorial or production process affect the accuracy of the published article, particularly its metadata, formatting, author information, or presentation.

Such errors may include incorrect article titles, author names, institutional affiliations, publication details, or production-related omissions that materially affect the accuracy or accessibility of the article.

A Publisher's Note must clearly describe the nature of the error and the changes made. It must be linked to the affected article and remain freely accessible to readers.

Transparency of corrections. All substantive corrections must be documented through an appropriate notice identifying the original article, explaining the changes, and providing the date of correction. Where applicable, the corrected article must include a clear reference to the published correction notice.

Minor typographical, grammatical, or formatting errors that do not affect the scholarly meaning, bibliographic accuracy, or integrity of the article may be corrected at the publisher's discretion without a separate formal notice.

The journal ensures that corrections are proportionate to the significance of the identified errors and that the publication record remains transparent and traceable.

3. Replacement of Article Versions

Jurnal Islamika: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman permits the replacement of a published article file with a corrected version only within a period of less than one week from the original publication date, provided that the changes do not substantially alter the article's research findings, scholarly arguments, or conclusions.

Any replacement within this period must be conducted transparently. The editorial office must document the date, nature, and justification of the changes to maintain an accurate and traceable publication history.

After the one-week period, substantive amendments must ordinarily be addressed through a formal correction notice linked to the original article rather than through an undocumented replacement of the published file.

The one-week limitation applies only to routine article file replacement and does not restrict the journal's responsibility to address significant errors, research misconduct, or other ethical concerns identified at any time after publication.

Authors who identify errors in their published articles must promptly contact the Editor-in-Chief through the journal's official communication channels. Requests for correction should clearly identify the affected article, specify the sections requiring amendment, explain the nature of the errors, and provide the proposed corrections with supporting documentation when necessary.

The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the Editorial Board and relevant experts where appropriate, will assess the significance of the errors and determine whether the appropriate action is a minor amendment, formal correction, Publisher's Note, expression of concern, or retraction.

All decisions concerning article replacement and post-publication amendments must prioritize the accuracy, transparency, accessibility, and long-term integrity of the scholarly record.

4. Expression of Concern

When serious concerns arise regarding the integrity or reliability of a published article but the available evidence is inconclusive, the journal may publish an Expression of Concern.

An Expression of Concern may be issued when an investigation is ongoing, relevant institutions have not provided sufficient information, or credible concerns remain unresolved.

The notice must clearly identify the article concerned, explain the nature of the concerns without making unsupported accusations, and remain accessible to readers.

An Expression of Concern does not necessarily indicate that research misconduct has been established. It serves to inform readers of unresolved issues that may affect their interpretation or use of the published research.

When sufficient evidence becomes available, the Editorial Board will review the notice and determine whether it should be updated, withdrawn, or followed by a correction or retraction.

5. Editorial Responsibility and Publication Integrity

The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board are responsible for evaluating post-publication concerns and determining appropriate editorial actions in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and relevant COPE guidance.

Editorial decisions must be based on verifiable evidence, scholarly reliability, and ethical considerations rather than institutional influence, personal relationships, or differences in religious and academic perspectives.

Authors are expected to cooperate with requests for clarification, supporting documentation, and corrections when necessary.

The journal is committed to ensuring that all corrections, retractions, and expressions of concern are handled fairly, consistently, and transparently.

Through this policy, Jurnal Islamika: Jurnal Ilmu-ilmu Keislaman seeks to safeguard the credibility of published scholarship, encourage responsible academic practices, and maintain public confidence in research across the diverse disciplines of Islamic studies.
